Most people would agree that watching the daily TV serials/soaps are a waste of time, a useless thing to do. Or people who have nothing better to do watch serials. I agree absolutely. Because I had been in a situation when I had absolutely nothing better to do but watch TV, as I finished all the books I had with me and had no luck with the net with its speed most of the time being zero :(. I couldn’t enjoy watching the Discovery channel in the regional language either!! So eventually I ended up falling for some of the serials. I watched them from morning till night. When the connection went wrong and I got only grey grains I would call left and right and made sure that someone came and fixed it ASAP. It was indeed crazy...
I remembered the time when we got Doordarshan in Trivandrum. I used to watch it 24/7 during vacations, including the soo boring educational program by Jamia Millia Islamia university!! I also remember Vikram Aur Vetal, The Giant Robot, and Buniyad so well!! Too bad Vikram Aur Vetal didn’t look exactly like the characters out of Ambiliammavan/Chandamama. None of the shows I have seen after wards were half as interesting as these old timers.
In one of those serials there is a daughter from a rich family who is in love and her parents fix her marriage with another guy. In order to stop the wedding she tells her family/ joint family that she is pregnant. The reaction of the people around her when she says this was an encyclopedia of negative emotions. Suddenly the family tries to fix the marriage of the girl at literarily any cost( as she is in love, which is a crime worse than anything in the world, and also claims to have his baby in her tummy) with a good for nothing fellow who acts like an idiot. Also imposing house arrest for her. But they always claim they are doing all these purely for her benefit, for her better future, how true. Just marry her off and we are saved, is the attitude. Mother is refusing to see the plight of this girl who cries her heart out. Even after she said she lied they are going ahead with the marriage with a new found vengeance!!
I was laughing it off thinking where am I going with these serials; suddenly I remembered reading about at least 1 honor killing or such type of news happening almost every other week in another part of this country. Sitting in this part of the country it is easier to laugh it off. But in some parts things are not that amusing when it comes to love and love marriages. The amounts of honor killings are on the rise, which is not at all fun. What we see in the serials are sometimes is a reflection of what is happening around us. So I wish they would make some good serials to help uplifting the society rather than making an even more mess of the already messed up customs and traditions. There are lots of people who watches these serials, (for the time being me too),so give them something good, something good to think about, rather than going to bed with a sour taste in your mind… But these shows thrives on showing the humiliation, misery and all the negatives aspects in the society so …no hope I guess :)
I can do one thing, stop watching them, which is exactly what I am planning to do since I have things to do now :)..
The serial made me ask a question, so what if a girl, who fall in love and marries the person she loves ends up later with a broken marriage? It is her choice after all. An arranged marriage does not guarantee 100% durability!! What I have heard is when there are issues in an arranged marriage the family would always support. But I feel if the parents really love their kids, irrespective of whether they had a love marriage or an arranged one they should support her/him in their times of trouble. Period.
I have heard questions like- 'Will you knowingly let your child play with fire?'. My answer is when he is a small kid I won’t. Once he’s a grownup I would tell him it is dangerous. Still if he chooses to play with fire, it is his business. I will tend to him when he needs care. !! It is any day better than being accused of robbing his happiness for the rest of his life as well as the rest of my life. Besides in this way if anything goes wrong I can always say the four words which the person who says love to say and the person who hears hate to hear-
‘I told you so ;)'.....

huh!!!
i was watching ZEE n star plus, now u figure out which one by watching all;)
A well argued article. TVs are at once the bane and boon of our existence. They are the time-killers for old and lonely people, but set bad examples to the youngsters.
Meera,
Marriage is the biggest gamble in life,I would say.
Love is different from real life.I remember,as medical students, when we used to go to coffee house,we would buy only cutlet and cold coffee for the girls. And then, the girls would eat only half of a cutlet,as if they are the lightest of eaters. We would have gone on eating cutlets, unless we got married. After marriage,we go back to Dosa and Kanji.
My feeling is that there is lot of scope of desperation in a love marriage. You never know the true colors of a person when you are in love.Expectations are more. And more of broken promises.
In an arranged marriage, you willfully take that gamble. Not much expectations, and not many surprises.
'You never know the true colors of a person when you are in love...'
Dr,you are right, but i feel this applies just as well in an arranged marriage too.The person is a total stranger! But then love or arranged,if we both works to make it work, then it will work..:)
Raji,it is a double edge sword:)
