Stealing her of her life..

I never thought I will be writing about something like this. The story I heard is making me mad, angry, sad and helpless. The ‘chechy’ who comes to our home took 2 months leave a few months back and for those two months absence she bought a relative of her to help us. This woman was very nice and had two kids. A boy studying in 8th standard and a girl who just completed plus 2.I met her daughter once, and she is a very good looking, young girl. Once when she told me that her daughter wanted to buy a new churidar for a wedding I took them both to the city and she got a churidar that she liked.

This girl was sitting home doing nothing and others pushed her to go to a nearby ayurveda hospital to get some work. She started going there and worked sometimes in the pharmacy or sometimes in the reception. Her mother told me she let her daughter sleep there at night since she is not sure about her safety at her own home. Her home is a one room shed with no real doors or walls. She felt her daughter might be safer in a room where she can lock herself from inside. She didn’t like her daughter sleeping in the same room when her husband comes every night after drinking alcohol. She asked me- how I can sleep when my daughter is also here when I know drinking could make him a beast at times. Her husband is a helper in construction field and gets about 500rs per day. Even though he doesn’t get work 30 days a month most of the days he does have work. Whatever he makes they buy food and clothes and have no savings at all, not to mention about his drinking. She told me until she started coming here, her husband used to beat her so badly. Once he beat her and broke her leg. She told me she used to think about killing him one day. I saw that she wasn’t joking, she was dead serious. I agreed, if someone gets beaten like this every day she might feel like finding her own ways to get back at him. When he drinks he would look for reasons just to beat her and throw away the food too. Sometimes he makes her go out of their room. One night, she told me she was pushed out of the room and he closed the door. She had to sit outside her home till morning and her mother living nearby came and sat with her through the night. Somehow after she started working here he did not abuse her physically. She told me she also told him that she got some phone numbers and if he ever tries to beat her she will call the police and they will arrest him. Anyway, she seemed happy those days and told me how she plans to sell her 2 cents and get her daughter married as soon as possible. She didn’t want her to stay unmarried too long. The earlier the better she told me. She asked me if I would go to the marriage if she calls me and I said I will be there for sure. I used to have lunch with her some days and that was the time she used to talk to me about her life. She told me whatever her daughter is going to earn from the hospital will be deposited in her name and will be used only for her marriage. She just started getting money the previous month and did not get any money for the past 5 months she worked there, day and night. She told me she will not let her husband touch one paisa from that account.

I heard a few days back that this girl is in hospital. What I heard was she fell down from bed in her sleep and broke her bones and had heavy bleeding. I am not a doctor but I was wondering heavy bleeding after falling down from bed? Could it be something more serious?

The next day when I asked ‘chechy’ how her condition was she said in a whisper that this girl was raped and needed a surgery as soon as she went to the hospital and she needs one more surgery!! The man who raped her, worked in that hospital, a father of two kids ran away the night it happened. I also heard an accusation in her tone when she asked me why she didn’t shout for help and also an assumption that she might have opened the door for him! Of course, when she is staying in a hospital and doing night duty, she has to open the door when someone knocks at her door!! I asked chechy what if the person drugged her and then did it? Then how can she shout for help or help herself? And I heard the saying too-‘The girl’s life is gone’. I told chechy to stop saying that. She didn’t do anything. Just because some @@#$$%%% creature did this to her how can we say her life is wasted?

I don’t think the people around are going to help her lead a normal life. I wanted very much to go and see her but I can’t since they are all trying to keep this a secret. Everybody knows but everybody is pretending this is a secret!

I asked this chechy who comes to our home to go and tell them to file a case. But then I heard the girl’s relatives asked for 5 lakhs from the people of this hospital to settle the ‘issue’ and they said they are ready to pay only 3 lakhs!!!.In the end they accepted 3 lakhs but when they went to the bank they found there is no money in the bank!!! I told ‘chechy’- At least now tell them to file a case!! What can I do, I can’t go and talk to them when they all are pretending like nothing happened other than she had a minor injury! To think that this is really happening this close to me makes me kind of numb..

Dear Meera
I had written once on the sex trade and child molestation. In India, half of these cases are not reported.
For a girl who is raped, it is the end of her life. It needs tremendous courage to survive and rebuild life.Others just spend the rest of the life on a cocoon, never growing to fly as a butterfly.
But look at the mother who agreed to settle for 3 lakhs ! Is it the price of her life?
