Shhhhhhhhhhh I am playing and hide and seek..

We’ve stopped our kid from having sleepovers at his friends’ houses. Since they ended up playing games or watching movies until way past midnight. The next day he would come home looking and acting like a zombie and I would have a hard time, not being one myself, dealing with him. Only one friend’s house I let him go, since the mother makes sure that the kids are in bed no later than 11.So when his friends asked him to join their church for a 'lock in', we thought to let him go and have fun .Since he was going alone, I let him take my cell phone with him.
Kids would play outside and then would sleep inside the church for the night. There would be couple of adults to supervise them.

Even though these kids are teenagers and are taller than we are, I have noticed they still have a certain degree of innocence in them. They know everything,(of course, they have sex education and knows everything about human body and the way it works..) ,they talk about everything ,but, there are times when their behavior shows they are still kids.

Anyway, I got a call at 10 pm. A whispering sound came. helloo, I am playing hide and seek! I asked what? He said shhhhhhhhhhhhh, don’t be loud! I am playing hide and seek! He was hiding inside somewhere in the church. When he got a bit scared, he thought of calling me and letting me know what’s going on.
About cell phones, most of his friends has it and most of them already lost a couple of them. He would ask for a phone every now and then. I told him he can consider my phone as his phone for the time being, with the only difference that I would be keeping it most of the time;). What we tell him is, unless it becomes a necessity, he won’t get one. He asked if he would get one after he starts college. I said if I am dropping him off and picking him up, even at that time you wont get one:) He didn’t like that joke:)
I was thinking about the time when we used to play hide and seek. When we hide, the pressure and tension was so high, it almost seemed like, it’s a life and death situation. If they find you, you are dead! It was as simple as that! I am Imagining how it would have been, having a cell phone with you during those times! I could have called and asked others where they are and if it’s safe to run back to the point and say SAAAAAAAAAAAT.

After my son put the phone down, I had a cruel plan to call him and let others find him. But a look from husband, made me give up that idea. okayyyyyyy I said, and I didn’t call him. But he did, at 1.36 am, to tell me that he is going to sleep now!

Hi Meera :)

Very interesting post.

Although you thought that your son will go to sleep by 10 pm in the church he slept only at 1.36 pm or that's what he said. I am sure the adults who were supposed to supervise him must have gone to sleep at 10 or 11pm leaving the kids to play. He is a teenager and in a difficult period of growing up stage. At this age they always like to do something contrary to what we adults say.

But I think your son is much more disciplined than kids of his age. He doesn't have a cell phone even now surprises me. Many parents give a cell phone to children at a very young age these days.

Times are changing. My son bought his own laptop when he was 22. I bought a lap top only when I retired. See the difference. He will even tell me that I don't know anything. Just because he knows something about computer and programming he thinks he knows everything under the sun :)

When my son grew taller than me I gave him Rs.1oo as present for overtaking me. We had a good laugh:)

I am sure your son will buy a cell phone when he goes to college by doing some part time work if you don't buy him one. Any way let's wait and see what happens:)

I enjoyed reading your post.

Have a nice day Meera :)

ya,my son asked permission to stay up this late.adults were not supposed to sleep till they are sure kids are in bed! i heared the next day adults looked sleepier than the kids:)and if he doesnt follow our instructions,he wont be going there anymore:)he knows that.he is well behaved so far, thank god, lets see how it goes:).
oh ya,they think they know all and someitmes it gets on my nerve when he asks-
'u do know what it means right??'.

i got a cell phone for myself only 2 years back, when i thought i needed one.kids thinks its their right to have one!! well,well..:)
it was funny that you gave your son 100rs when he overtook you!here my son's aim is to beat his father in a game of wrestling.his father said, when you do that i will agree iam getting old:)
