While in Punjab we decided to go and see the Golden Temple, Jalianwala bagh and Waga border on Christmas day. We loved the narrow dark streets of Amritsar. Visiting the Golden temple was an experience. There is a small canal of warm running water in front of the temple to wash our feet before we enter the temple. I just loved this idea, since it was cold outside the warm water felt like blessing.
Even though it was crowded, all the people around were extremely polite and appeared to be in no hurry. I didn’t see any pushing around or impatience. I saw for the first time discipline and order in a crowded place in India!!! I was thinking about the famous temple in Kerala where I saw one volunteer pushing a devotee rudely and shouting at him to move forward. What a difference. We visited the museum too and saw color full photos of the people who died in accidents on the walls. There might be reasons for that but for little kids I felt that could be a little upsetting. But no matter what the museum is very well kept.
Our friends told us to have either breakfast or lunch from the Langar, free food. I saw inside the huge hall people sitting down and accepting food with their palms up in a very humble way. My son was a bit upset about this as he has seen beggars doing this and never thought he himself would have to do it to get food.:). The curry, chappathy and kheer tasted really good. Everything there was taken care of in a perfect way, including handing out small sacks to put the prasadam in it!!!!! We were amazed and impressed beyond words, not forgetting the cleanliness we saw inside.
