Sarada ,Swayamwaram and me!!

Whenever i tell my husband that i will wake up the next morning really really late, its always a proven fact that,i wont get a good night's sleep the previous night and would wake up at 5 in the morning or even before and wont be able to go back to sleep.Today was no different.Since its the end of spring break week day,i thought i should get up at 8.Well i was up by 5 and found myself thinking about my old summer vacation with velyammachi and then in between thinking about the black and white movie we saw the other day,Swayamwaram Adoor Gopalakrishnan's first Malayalam movie.
Summer vacation meant a train trip to Thiruvalla, to my paternal grandmother's home. She was a single child for her parents and was very practical. Not the typical loving grandmother. When i look back to those days, the time spend there had its own charm. One thing i remember is when she would buy fresh fish, and put them in charam/ash .We would gather around and watch the still live fish called-mushi.She would tell not to come near with open mouth or the fish will jump right in to our mouth and get stuck inside the throat and we could die.She would make meen peera pattichathu and we can eat rice with just that curry. It tasted so good.

Coming to Swayamwaram,we both like old black and white movies. We just love those types of movies.Somehow we feel we can relate to the scenes, the characters in those movies easily.Growing up as kids in 70s,we have seen those black and white people around us.Most men wore white mund and shirt. Most women wore white blouses with any colorful Saree's.All in all life around us looked black and white.Life seemed more simpler.Even with no TV or games,i don't remember a moment that i felt bore.Making perfect mannappam with chiratta and using different colorful petals as curries, using the gate as a swing and kept on swinging on it for hours.Standing out at the gate from 4.30 to watch people going back to their homes from work.Seeing my father turning the corner, sometimes i would run ahead to meet him.If i did something bad i would wait for my mother a little bit early and run to her with such a happy face, that she would have trouble getting angry at me,even after my sisters complain to her about me ,but it was not fun.
Anyway,i liked Sarada, better than Sheela or Jayabharathi.Sarada has an innocence in her which is lacking in the other two.She has perfect features. She looked so beautiful and radiant in that movie. Her transformation from a cheerful, care free girl , to the poverty stricken widow was simply good.We can never get enough of those movies. We just love it.Even though Prem Nazir does seems like over acting, who cares. We still think he is the best.

But there are some new movies too that i really liked.Like Ore Kadal.A different ending rather than the plain old story in which the wife always goes back to the husband. The story had the strength to show it in a different angle. And meera acted up to her standard.Songs are beautiful too.

Even I miss the good old days when only Doordarshan used to entertain us... I think watching a movie in a stretch was only then.. well before the splurge of hundreds of channels...
