I was busy cooking and heared the sound of the lawn mower in our front yard. I peeped through the curtain and saw, Gary our neighbor mowing the lawn, even though there was hardly any grass on the field at this time, when we had almost ¾ inches of snow a day before! I went out and gave him a couple of Dove candies which he likes. We talked for a while and he went back to his work.
He is the best neighbor anyone could ever have. We moved over to this quiet peaceful neighborhood 6 years ago on the month of November. We met Gary and Lavon before Christmas. Then after that, every year, they would come over to our home before Christmas. She would bring a tray full of cakes, candies and cookies, all made by her. The sugar cookies are the best and she adds more and more sugar cookies every year. Then we will go to their home a couple of days before Christmas and spend sometime and come back. It will be the same old stories he tells us every year. How he carried his bride from the road, over the fence and walked all the way to her home, in the snow:) .Gary is in his late 60s but more active and healthier than any guys half his age.
During other months, we both mind our own business. We bother each other only if we needs to. Like, one time, I thought I saw a snake like thing inside the garage. I love watching all the Discovery programs on snakes; reptiles etc but cant stand a live one. This place I thought was safe, because there were no poisonous snakes here. Too cold for them I guess. I called him right away and he came running with his wife. When he learned it’s about a snake, his wife ran away as she also can’t stand snakes. He took care of that, it was a garden snake.
Once I had to go pick up the kid from school on a Saturday, and suddenly for the first time, the van wont start. I couldn’t get hold of husband either, as he was in the middle of his class. He teaches marital arts during his free time. Gary came and took me to my kid’s school, and took us back home. He tried to fix the problem but couldn’t.
When they go for vacation, I have to water their vegetable patch and their flower pots. I can take whatever vegetables I need from the garden. When we go home every year, he does the same for us. He would also mow the lawn for us. He would come inside and inspect the house and flush the toilets, because he says if they are not flushed every now and then there could be chances of explosion. So he makes sure everything is okay.
During summer, he would come with a huge trap to trap groundhog. They are known for destroying buildings according to him. Once we caught one and took it all the way out to an empty land, and set it free. But he says noooooooo. He doesn’t want them set free. He said he will take ‘care’ of it.
We have a huge backyard with a dog house, thats occupied by groundhogs and raccoons. There are deers and sometime turkeys roam around the backyard. We don’t bother them unless they cross the fence and come near our home.
When his computer goes wrong, he would call-Hello young lady. Your husband home?
Then my husband would go there and fixes whatever needs to be fixed.
During snow time, he often cleans our drive way.
He is such a nice human being. Very very helpful. He also taught me how to can tomatoes which was helpful when I made tomato jam later that year, when we had way too many tomatoes in our garden.
There are people like him who make our life easier and make us feel happy.
Last year I awarded him with a certificate that says he has won gold medal for the best decorated house for Christmas in our street and he has it framed :)
