When I was in Pahalgam, that’s what I was thinking. We took a trip to Kashmir, and surrounding places. Of all the places we had been to, the most wonderful place I’ve ever been was Pahalgam. We started from Gulmarg late afternoon and we reached Pahalgam by 9. We decided earlier that we were not going to book hotel there but wanted to find a good one in person. The driver took us first to a hotel on the main street. We decided to pass that one and told driver to take us to hotel Heevan. He said ‘but it’s inside the jungle’. We said yes, let’s go there. He asked for direction at a place called Aruvalley, but pronounced as – AADUVvalley, when he was doing that a herd of sheep came that way, and I was thinking this is funny, Aadu means goat in Malayalam and we are in a place called Aadu valley with full of Aadu! Then after a few minutes we saw lots of lights on the other side of a river. Cars won’t go across the fragile looking wooden bridge. So we had to get down on this side of the bridge and cross over the bridge. Husband and I decided to go first and check it out and the hotel people said they don’t have any rooms facing the river. I felt so disappointed, I was sure we won’t find such a hotel in that area. But he went and talked to them again and in the end they arranged one room facing the river and another facing the forest!!! I don’t know why they had to make such a scene.. That night we slept peacefully, unlike the previous night inside the army accommodation one rat ran over my head and was making a lot noises by jumping through plastic bags and all, in short I didn’t sleep!
