Villain of the pond..

Lazy days are here again. Nothing much is happening. And then suddenly yesterday our chechy shouted for me to come out and see. I ran out to see the villain of my pond, the huge, long slithery chera sitting under a bush with an even bigger frog inside its mouth.  I always feel sad for the fish, herons are there, frogs are there and this huge long snake too comes once in a while to eat them. I miss my camera!!! I need to seriously think about getting the old camera fixed, which my son gladly let fall on the sand, along with him falling on the ground!! Moments like this do not come that often!! I decided to take the long stick that chechy uses for removing cobwebs and ran towards the snake. Well, I did not really hit the snake, I can’t think of listening to the sound of the stick hitting its slithery body. It’s nasty. So I beat the ground to make it run. The snake spit the frog from its mouth and started moving away.  It couldn’t run faster in the sand and it seemed like decided to come after me!! I hit the ground a little harder and it changed the path and moved faster in the opposite direction, through the bougainvillea, up the wall and finally down the wall to the empty land nearby. When I looked the frog was there half dead but still managing to move around. Poor fellow’s body was all red. Seeing that I got a bit scared thinking ‘so cheras can bite! I should be little more careful next time.  Next, came my mil to see what’s happening.

I left her with chechy and came in. My job  is finished so I let them deal with the frog now. Later on I heard they somehow managed to throw the frog over the wall after the snake! I can go to sleep feeling okay that after all I didn’t let the snake go starving and also feeling happy that I didn’t let the frog eat my fish. I am not going to think about the frogs, as I hate them for visiting the pond to eat the poor fishL. But then the frogs also do their duty by eating mosquitoes!!  I don’t want chera in my property, but husband says it is his friend and makes the rats stay away!! As long as frogs are there snakes will come Soooo what do I do?? It’s a cycle, but I have to break it once in a while, at some point....

I called my husband and said-'Today your friend visited'. He asked in a voice that reflected a face with rolling eyes- 'Did you kill it???????'  I said 'No, not this time. But I have a good mind to do so if it comes again. So tell your friend to keep away from our pond'.

We had a lovely pond in the front yard, teaming with fish and flowering lotus. But along with, these daily visitors, who fed on the frogs and the fish.No options were there other than to fill the pond.Poisonous or not, they are frightening.
