It’s been sometime since we celebrated Onam in Kerala. Somehow I feel the spirit of Onam was more present when I was outside Kerala. Used to buy frozen banana leaves weeks before onam. Finding ripe mangoes was a pain in the neck even if I was ready to pay 3 dollars for a single mango:( Sometimes even if I am ready to pay more I won’t get any ripe mangoes and ended up driving around the area looking for ripe plantains instead! Since it was me who was doing all this alone, made it more fun. Nobody was there to tell me- this is the way you have to do it, or oh you put garlic in it??? No no no, only shallots etc. I ended up my cooking’s successfully with just a few overseas calls to clear some doubts , and depending on net for on the spot doubts. No interruptions at all. I enjoyed it a lot.
Here in Trivandrum the crowded roads made me lethargic not excited. All I wanted to do was stay away from the crowd. So I missed a lot of program’s I wanted to see
:( .I can say it was never this crowded before, or am I being ignorant..
One of the two highlights of this Onam was 1) I got to see my brother. :)He is worse than Maveli who at least comes to see his people during Onam once in a year. By the time I blinked my eyes and opened it he was gone!! 2) We went to see vallamkali/ boat race on Thiruvonam day. So all in all it wasn’t too boring!
Today my son went to see Onam procession for the first time. He was at my brother’s home enjoying the last day of his Onam vacation with his grandmother. He said he got two VVIP passes and thought that guaranteed seats:) . Later on he called me and told me they were late and didn’t get seats so they are coming back:). He seems a bit disappointed but he got a firsthand experience of what Onam is about in Trivandrum city.
Happy belated Onam wishes to all:)

I enjoyed reading your post. In fact, I can see how these things can change the spirit of Onam.
Maybe the crowd has grown, and also maybe have you grown used to thinner 'crowds' having lived outside India??
Thanks jennifer:)May be i guess i was always a bit nervous around huge crowd.:)
